FAQ

Is it strictly black tie?
We ask that everyone makes a real effort at the event. That doesn't necessarily mean tuxedo and bow tie (although most of the guys wear a tux) and we will accept suits and ties. Burton Menswear in Leeds City Centre are the official suit supplier at this year's event.

Is it more ball dress style for girl or cocktail dress style?
Cocktail dresses or ball dress are both popular at the Ball, however the dress code is not intended to be set in stone for girls.

How do the coaches work?
When you buy your ticket you will be asked which coach you wish to get on. Coaches leave Parkinson Steps at 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11pm. You will only be able to board the coach for which you have a ticket. The 8, 9 and 10pm coaches usually sell out on the first 3 days of sale - so make sure you get your ticket sorted out as early as possible!

Can people who aren't students attend?
Tickets for the Summer Ball must be purchased by an NUS card holder, or a Leeds University Alumnus. With your student card you are very welcome to buy tickets for guests who aren't students. Please be aware that the Summer Ball is only for people over the age of 18.

How many tickets can I buy?
With a Leeds University student card you can buy a ticket for yourself and two guests. If you wish to buy tickets on behalf of other people you must bring their student cards with you when you buy the ticket - you will only be able to buy one ticket on each extra student card you bring. Students from other Universities and Colleges can buy two tickets on each of their student cards.

Is food included in the ticket price?
Food is not included in the ticket price - the logistics of feeding 9000 people make it impossible unfortunately. There is food available at The Summer Ball but we advise you to eat a good, healthy meal before you set off from home.

How much money should I bring with me?
We can't advise how much money to bring with you to the Ball - that's up to you. Just be aware that you can't pay by card over the bars at the Summer Ball.

How do I make sure that I don't lose my friends?
It's a really good idea to arrange a meeting point (eg outside the Tunnel Club Arena or by the seating area) when you arrive at the Ball. It's pretty difficult to get through to friends on their mobile when they're partying in one of the big top arenas - by having a meeting point you know where to find each other if you get separated - texts are often the best way to get in touch at the Ball.

Is there a cloakroom?
Yes - and it's free to use.

Should ladies bring something warm for later in the evening?
We recommend that ladies bring something to wrap up in - it can get chilly at 4am outside of the arenas even in summer! You can always put it in the cloakroom early in the evening and pick it up later on.

What shoes should I wear?
All the arenas are connected by hard walkways but a lot of the site is on grass - it's a good idea not to wear really spiky high heels!

Can I bring a guest who isn't a student at Leeds Uni?
Yes, your guests do not have to be students. The Summer Ball is only for people over the age of 18.

What times do the coaches leave the hall to return to Leeds?
The coaches begin to return from Lotherton Hall to the Parkinson Steps from 12.30am onwards.

What facilities will there be for Disabled Ball goers?
We provide special transport for all of our disabled guests to and from the Summer Ball, we also provide disabled toilet facilites. The site itself is all flat, the arenas all have hard, wooden dancefloors and everything is linked by a system of hard walkways. If you are concerned or if you want to speak to someone about your personal requirements please email t.salmon@leeds.ac.uk.

Is there a good turn out of mature students and staff at the ball?
The Ball attracts students from every walk of life - the diversity of the attractions and acts means that there is something for everyone at the Ball. Mature and postgraduate students are well represented at the event.

Is there any parking on site if I want to drive to Lotherton Hall?
Yes, there is plenty of parking available if you do not want to catch the coach and you are not drinking alcohol at the Summer Ball.

Do you search people on the way into the ball?
We reserve the right to operate a random search policy in order to prevent alcohol and other items entering the Summer Ball.

Are students from other Leeds colleges invited to attent?
Students from Leeds Metropolitan University, Trinity and All Saints, Leeds College of Music, and Leeds College of Art and Design are all able to attend the Summer Ball.
